this year, we have two advent calendars at home, one from gabby's doll's house and the other from pokemon. each day we get either a chocolate or a miniature of the cutest doll of the moment.
the first advent calendars were made in germany in the early 1900s. they are used to count down to 25 december and usually contain a small item, inspirational quote, toy, or sweet that is revealed each day.
christmas is undoubtedly about consumerism. we can point to this bogeyman and talk about the thousand dangers surrounding it and our need to indulge.
the truth is that, in the midst of it all, the music, the decorations, the presents, and the anxiety of counting, bring necessary magic to our days. we need special days on the calendar. the reality is that if the social conditions are right, christmas is a moment of happiness for many, but in between there are a series of moments of consumerism.
