five restaurants to try in lisbon

five restaurants to try in lisbon

lisbon’s food scene has been thriving for over a decade now and shows no sign of slowing down anytime soon with new restaurants opening every other month. wether you’re visiting the portuguese capital for a few days or just want to indulge on a good meal over the weekend, here are some not so obvious choices or recently opened spots that are definitely worth a visit... or two.

DO BECO PADARIA ARTESANAL & BRUNCH

I went to do beco with one mission and one mission only: to try their tornado eggs, a perfect mix of two eggs, homemade kimchi, crème fraiche and a brioche bun that literally looks like a tornado. what I didn’t knew was that I was about to fall in love with their pastries too. the cookie croissant with peanut butter & chocolate and the cardamom roll steal the show. I also love the fact that the owners didn’t over did the interiors. it still looks like a traditional bakery.

CERVEJARIA TEIMAR

right in the heart of campo de ourique, one of lisbon’s most lively neighborhoods and home to some great restaurants, cervejaria teimar is a must-go for all the seafood lovers. no wonder why the most requested - and photographed - dish on the menu is the carabineiro (scarlett prawn) rice. it’s absolutely divine! but don’t stick to the entrée and order some starters. my favorites? the shrimp croquette and the tuna tartare.

MAGNÓLIA LISBOA

summer is almost coming to an end and I can’t think of a better place to catch up with friends over a glass of wine on a fall afternoon than magnólia, specially if seating outside with a blanket. located in praça das flores, this cozy bistrôt still features some elements of its original architecture while displaying interesting wine choices. they also serve dinner, which I have yet to try.

TRICKY’S

the motto at tricky’s is simple: “drink. dine. dance.”. drink? check. dine? check. dance? not yet. but trust me, you will have a good time. when I first visited tricky’s, I was lucky enough to seat at the counter which gave me the privilege to watch chef joão magalhães correia cook right in front of me. featuring a product-driven menu, there’s always something new to try. I visited tricky’s on three different occasions and I still remember the freshness of the lírio from azores with leche de tigre that I had in one of those visits.

ANTIGA CAMPONESA

if you find yourself in the mood for some traditional portuguese food with a modern twist or want to try it for the first time, then the latest restaurant from the owners of taberna das flores and quiosque de são paulo might be the answer to your prayers. on saturdays, they serve the tainadas*, a 29 signature menu (beverages are not included) by chef andré magalhães that always changes. don’t forget to check their instagram profile for the latest updates to the menu.

*a colloquial word for a festive gathering of people to eat and drink.

cátia santos reis the world is yours but greece is mine” could be her mantra as cátia santos reis is yet to find a greek island she hasn’t fallen in love with. in the meantime, she keeps traveling the world. for CINCO editorial, the 34 year-old, will share her favorite things to do, visit and eat in every destination.
